The book begins with an old man helping a young girl escape from the king who wants to kill her to not step down from his position. The next chapter begins with Alek losing his job as a smith and being recruited into Lord Bracken's militia. Out of luck, he became a squire for Lord Bracken. During his excellent skill on the battlefield, he became known as Levin bannerbreaker. However, he gets separated from his militia during an ambush. And manage to meet with Mae and Princess Delia, also known as Carenia. Together he travels with them to the cowfolk to keep Carenia safe from the king.
What I liked about the book was the world-building because it was explained in great detail. The development of the character was also entertaining to read because it showed how the character was able to develop from a person who couldn't land a single job to someone that can protect people. The events in the book are also fluid and easy to follow. There wasn't a moment when I was confused or lost. Another aspect that I liked was it was exciting and it wasn't predictable.
However, what I didn't like about the book was the romance. Although the book's main focus was the action and suspense, the romance just came out of nowhere. There was no build-up between the two characters and no indication of initial attraction; it just happened without a hint or clue. Another aspect that I didn't like was how the main character or supporting characters didn't have any personality flaws. Despite the flaws, the book's plot was good and full of suspense, and I would recommend the book to people who like adventure and action books and people who want a more plot-driven book rather than character building book.
Overall, I would rate the book as 4 out of 5 because I thought that the book lacked focus on the development of the character and mainly focused on the plot. However, the plot was good and I enjoyed the action and unpredictable events that happened in the story.
