  The book begins with an old man helping a young girl escape from the king who wants to kill her to not step down from his position. The next chapter begins with Alek losing his job as a smith and being recruited into Lord Bracken's militia. Out of luck, he became a squire for Lord Bracken. During his excellent skill on the battlefield, he became known as Levin bannerbreaker. However, he gets separated from his militia during an ambush. And manage to meet with Mae and Princess Delia, also known as Carenia. Together he travels with them to the cowfolk to keep Carenia safe from the king. What I liked about the book was the world-building because it was explained in great detail. The development of the character was also entertaining to read because it showed how the character was able to develop from a person who couldn't land a single job to someone that can protect people.
